Maharashtra housing authority plans to redevelop 7 lakh sq ft to rehabilitate refugee families

Meanwhile, residents resist demolition of their dilapidated properties even as they differ on the mode of redevelopment

The 25 buildings which Hindu and Sikh Punjabi refugees have been living in since 1957 have become so dilapidated that they have to be vacated. The Maharashtra government plans to redevelop them, and give the owners apartments of more than 600 sq. ft., in place of the existing 360 sq. ft. flats. Per MHADA’s rough estimate, 28 lakh sq. ft. can be developed in the 11-acre GTB Nagar refugee colony (also known as Punjabi Colony). Of this, over 7 lakh sq. ft. would be used to rehabilitate refugees families.
