Mumbai Metro-8 To Connect Both Airports By 2029

In a landmark initiative to improve airport connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, a new metro corridor—Metro Line 8, also known as the Gold Line—is being developed to directly link Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).

Spanning approximately 35 to 40 kilometres, Metro Line 8 will be the first of its kind in India to connect two major airports while also bridging Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. The corridor aims to offer air travellers a quicker, seamless transit option and help decongest roadways and the suburban railway network.

The project will be executed jointly by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on the Mumbai end and the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) on the Navi Mumbai side.

Key Features:

  • Length: Approx. 35–40 km

  • Design speed: 90 km/h

  • Structure: 9.25 km underground, 25.63 km elevated

  • Stations: 8 (approved)

  • Estimated cost: ₹15,000 crore

  • Target completion: 2029

The metro line will begin at CSMIA Terminal 2 in Andheri, run underground until Chhedanagar in Chembur, and then continue as an elevated corridor to NMIA. Key stops include Kurla, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), Mankhurd, Vashi, Nerul, and Belapur.

Travellers will also benefit from existing and upcoming metro lines that enhance airport access, such as Metro Line 7A, connecting with Metro Line 7, and Metro Line 1 (Versova–Andheri–Ghatkopar), which links to Airport Road Station.

Once operational, Metro Line 8 is set to transform intercity airport transfers and provide a significant boost to urban mobility in the region.
