June 13, 2025: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani has directed that waste brought to the Mulund Launch Site from across Mumbai must be processed within the prescribed timeframe and disposed of immediately.
Gagrani issued these instructions during an on-site inspection of the Bio-Mining Project at the Mulund Launch Site earlier today. Accompanied by Deputy Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Kiran Dighavkar and other civic officials and staff, the Commissioner reviewed the project’s progress and evaluated the operations firsthand.
The bio-mining initiative, launched by the BMC’s Solid Waste Management Department, aims to process and scientifically dispose of approximately 7 million metric tonnes of legacy waste accumulated at the Mulund dumping ground. The project, operational since October 2019, has so far processed 4.81 million metric tonnes—equivalent to 68.77% of the total waste.
As part of the procedure, the waste is separated into components such as soil, combustible materials, and inert materials like stones. The BMC is implementing this project to clear the Mulund dumping ground and restore the original site.
During the inspection, Gagrani also reviewed the machinery deployed for the bio-mining process and examined the methodology being used in the scientific treatment of waste.
