As part of the resettlement effort, the project-affected persons (PAPs) will be relocated to Bhandup West, where six rehabilitation buildings are currently under construction. Each eligible family will be allotted a 300 sq ft flat in the new residential towers.
The GMLR project is a key infrastructural initiative aimed at improving east-west connectivity across Mumbai. At its core is a 4.7-kilometre underground tunnel, stretching from Film City in Goregaon to Mulund, concluding near the Amar Nagar settlement. Once completed, the project is expected to ease traffic congestion significantly and enhance daily urban commuting.
A senior official from the BMC’s bridges department confirmed that a total of 906 flats are being developed at Runwal Forests in Bhandup, specifically for this rehabilitation programme. The relocation of eligible residents is expected to be completed by December this year.
Of the 625 hutments marked for demolition, the civic body has so far completed four of the seven Annexure II surveys, which are used to determine rehabilitation eligibility. Around 350 slum dwellers have already been deemed eligible, while assessments for the remaining residents are ongoing.
The new buildings, being developed by the BMC’s building construction department, will comprise six towers with a ground-plus-23-storey layout. These structures are being tailored to accommodate all eligible families and ensure a seamless transition as the GMLR tunnel work gathers pace.
