August 16, 2025: The planned repair work on Thane’s Ghodbunder Road, scheduled between 15 and 18 August, has been postponed owing to adverse weather conditions and anticipated traffic congestion during the Independence Day weekend. The Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation had earlier announced extensive traffic diversions to facilitate asphalt resurfacing on the Gaimukh Ghat stretch of the road.
These included a ban on heavy vehicles and alternate routes via Bhiwandi–Kalher, the Mumbai–Nashik Highway, and Chinchoti. However, with continuous rainfall and expectations of heavy holiday traffic, the diversion plan was withdrawn. Ghodbunder Road serves as a crucial arterial corridor linking Thane with Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai, Virar, Borivali, and Dahisar. It is also an essential route for heavy vehicles travelling from Gujarat and Vasai towards JNPA Port and Bhiwandi.
The Gaimukh Ghat section, in particular, is prone to damage during the monsoon, with recurring potholes causing congestion and inconvenience for commuters.
This year, August 15 coincided with a Friday, creating an extended holiday weekend. Officials feared severe disruption if repair work was carried out amid increased traffic flow and persistent rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had also issued a yellow alert for Thane on August 15, followed by an orange alert until 19 August, warning of “heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places” ranging between 64.5 mm and 204.4 mm.
Authorities have yet to announce a revised schedule for the roadwork. Fresh traffic diversion advisories are expected to be issued by the Thane City Police and the Mira-Bhayandar-Vasai-Virar Police once new dates are confirmed. Commuters are advised to remain updated through official traffic notifications and plan their travel accordingly.
