August 20, 2025: Mumbai’s new cable-stayed Belasis flyover, designed to connect Tardeo, Nagpada and Mumbai Central station, is progressing steadily and is expected to be completed by December 31, 2025, ahead of its initial deadline, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has confirmed. Preparatory works have already been carried out, with obstructing structures removed to facilitate smoother construction.
The project replaces the historic Bellasis Bridge, which was first constructed in 1893 but dismantled in June 2024 after a structural audit declared it unsafe. To ensure speed and safety, especially over active railway lines, engineers opted for a cable-stayed design.
The initiative is being jointly executed by multiple agencies. The BMC is responsible for approach road works, while the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) are coordinating efforts. Within the railway boundary, Western Railway is managing construction.
So far, the project has achieved notable milestones. Twelve main girders, each 36 metres long, have already been launched during the first phase. Additional works underway include girder bracing, deck sheeting, and slab casting. These activities involve 40 planned construction blocks, requiring close coordination of both traffic and power supply.
Providing an update on progress, Abhijeet Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), stated:
“Soil testing, foundation works and pier construction have been completed. All obstructions that once hindered progress have been cleared. Within railway limits, 12 major girders have already been successfully launched by the contractor.”
Furthermore, four of the 40 girders required for the eastern approach road are now in place. Once completed, the Belasis flyover is set to enhance east-west connectivity in south Mumbai, easing traffic congestion and offering commuters a more seamless travel experience.
