August 20, 2025: The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, India’s first bullet train corridor, has reached several important milestones as construction accelerates across Gujarat and Maharashtra. Officials confirmed that foundation work has been completed on 406 kilometres of the 508-kilometre corridor, with track laying already underway on a 127-kilometre viaduct.
Progress on supporting structures has been substantial. More than 395 kilometres of piers have been erected, while girder casting and launching activities are advancing across 300 kilometres. Overhead equipment mast installation has also commenced, a crucial step toward electrification.
Station development is gathering pace. In Gujarat, foundation work has been completed at eight stations, including Vapi, Surat, and Ahmedabad. In Maharashtra, work is progressing at Thane, Virar, and Boisar. Excavation at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex underground station is close to completion, with base slab casting in progress.
Bridging natural barriers remains a focus. Sixteen river bridges are complete, with major crossings over the Narmada, Mahi, Tapti, and Sabarmati rivers underway. In Maharashtra, several bridge projects are in advanced stages. The only tunnel in Gujarat is finished, while excavation for the undersea tunnel has begun. The 4-kilometre tunnel between Ghansoli and Shilphata is also complete.
The project reflects significant investment in modern infrastructure. Nearly Rs 79,000 crore has been spent so far, generating thousands of jobs across construction and supply chains. All 1,389 hectares of land have been acquired, alongside key environmental, forest, and coastal clearances.
Designed with sustainability in mind, noise barriers are being installed and energy-efficient systems integrated to support India’s net-zero goals. With all 28 civil contract packages awarded and utilities relocated, momentum remains strong. While officials remain cautious on announcing a commissioning date, they highlight that integration of civil, electrical, signalling, and rolling stock works is essential before operations commence.
