August 23, 2025: The iconic Mt Mary Basilica in Bandra has unveiled a refreshed look following a two-year-long restoration project, completed this week. The historic shrine, dedicated to Mother Mary, will be formally inaugurated in October, offering devotees and visitors a renewed glimpse of its timeless charm.
Fr. Vernon Aguiar, rector of Mt Mary, shared details of the extensive work undertaken. “We have finished all the main work, like waterproofing the roof, redoing the interiors, windows, and woodwork, and that is where we changed the colour. We went back to brown from blue because of the woodwork. We have upgraded the lights, electrical fittings, and acoustics. And we have completed on schedule.”
The project has not only preserved the church’s heritage but also introduced modern conveniences. Vice rector Fr Sunder Albuquerque credited Archbishop John Rodrigues, the former rector, with initiating the task. “Archbishop John Rodrigues [former rector of the Basilica] had initiated the task, and we continued and completed it. We are raising funds now, in fact, because we have spent a lot to also install infrastructure like washrooms, ramps, and platforms for food courts for the pilgrims, where they can sit and eat their meals beneath the trees. I am so pleased with the outcome.”
The restoration was led by conservation architects David Cardoz and Ainsley Lewis, who worked to preserve the architectural integrity of the basilica while ensuring the structure could meet the needs of thousands of pilgrims who visit during the famed Bandra Fair and throughout the year.
With its interiors refurbished, lighting upgraded, and facilities expanded, the basilica stands ready to welcome the faithful once again, blending its historic spiritual significance with renewed elegance and modern functionality.
