Mumbai–Ratnagiri Connectivity Strengthened With Four-Hour Ro-Ro Ferry Service

August 28, 2025: Mumbai is set to launch its long-awaited roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ferry service to the Konkan coast, offering travellers a faster and more sustainable alternative to road journeys. Beginning 1 September, the new service will cover the Mumbai-to-Jaigad route in just three to four hours, a sharp reduction from the eight to ten hours typically required by road.

Modelled on the success of the Mumbai–Alibaug ferry, the service has been billed as a game-changer in coastal connectivity. A senior official said, “This sea link will act as an extension of the Mumbai-Goa Highway and the Konkan Railway, giving commuters and tourists a time-efficient and eco-friendly choice.”

The vessel has been designed to carry both passengers and vehicles, including 50 cars, 30 two-wheelers and bicycles, ensuring seamless onward travel upon arrival in Konkan. Ticketing has been divided into four categories: Economy at Rs 2,500, Premium at Rs 4,000, Business at Rs 7,500 and First Class at Rs 9,000. Vehicle fares have been fixed at Rs 6,000 per car, Rs 1,000 per two-wheeler and Rs 600 per bicycle.

Experts note that the RoRo service is expected to ease pressure on the Mumbai-Goa Highway while cutting fuel consumption and carbon emissions. The maiden voyage will depart from Bhau Cha Dhakka at 6:30 am, reaching Jaigad before proceeding to Vijaydurg in Sindhudurg. Initially, the service will cover Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, with future plans to extend to Shrivardhan and Mandwa.

Transport analysts also highlight the potential for tourism-led growth, with faster access likely to attract investment in hospitality, leisure and eco-tourism along the Konkan belt. After delays caused by the monsoon, favourable weather has now cleared the way for operations.

The launch marks a step towards integrating water-based mobility into Maharashtra’s transport mix, promising smoother journeys, reduced congestion and greener travel.
