BMC To Establish 100-Bed Veterinary Hospital In Malad Within Two Years

August 29, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced on Thursday that it will set up a 100-bed veterinary hospital in Malad, a first-of-its-kind civic facility for comprehensive animal care in Mumbai. The project will be developed in collaboration with the Shrimad Rajchandra Jivdaya Trust under a public–private partnership model, with the hospital expected to be operational within the next two years.

The foundation stone for the project was laid earlier this week by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Officials said the initiative is intended to provide advanced healthcare services for pets, stray dogs, cattle, birds and other animals across the city.

According to Dr Kaleempasha Pathan, Head of BMC’s Veterinary Health Department, the facility will be spread across a 2,240-square-metre plot in Malad. It will feature modern medical infrastructure, including diagnostic services such as X-ray and MRI, state-of-the-art surgical and intensive care units, and specialised treatment wings for small animals.

Importantly, the hospital will also serve as a shelter for stray animals impounded under the pound system, ensuring they receive both treatment and proper care. A small animal crematorium is also planned on-site, offering a humane facility for end-of-life services.

Beyond treatment, the campus will incorporate a training and skill development centre for veterinarians, helping to raise professional standards in animal healthcare. Residential quarters for doctors and staff are also part of the blueprint, ensuring round-the-clock availability of medical attention.

BMC officials described the project as a significant step forward in strengthening veterinary infrastructure in Mumbai. Once completed, it is expected to become a model facility, combining advanced treatment with animal welfare and veterinary education.
