September 10, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will restart work on 574 roads from October as part of its ambitious cement concreting project covering 2,121 roads across Mumbai. The initiative, launched in 2023, aims to provide longer-lasting roads and significantly reduce potholes across the city.
The 574 stretches were taken up for construction after the 2024 monsoon but were only partially completed before work was paused for the rainy season. Civic officials confirmed that these will be resumed immediately after the monsoon, with a target for completion by May 2026.
Simultaneously, work will also begin on another 776 roads that have not yet been addressed. Some of these are expected to be ready by May 2027. So far, 771 roads covering around 186 km have been completed, accounting for 64% of Phase I and 37% of Phase II. Overall, 49% of the project is complete.
Phase I involves 700 roads stretching over 324 km, while Phase II includes 1,421 roads spanning 377 km. Originally, BMC had set deadlines of December 2025 and December 2026 for completion of the two phases.
Civic officials explained that project planning factored in society entrances that would be blocked during construction, ensuring residents retained access to main roads. A buffer period was also included to account for unforeseen delays.
In a move towards transparency, BMC has introduced a ‘social audit’ through a dedicated online dashboard. The platform, linked to Google Maps, provides zone-, ward- and road-wise updates, including percentage of work completed and contact details of engineers responsible.
Officials said the dashboard allows citizens to track progress, anticipate disruptions and raise grievances directly. The civic body believes this step will improve accountability and address long-standing concerns about road works in the city.
