September 18, 2025: Mumbai’s civic body is advancing multiple key infrastructure projects to improve connectivity and reduce congestion across the city. As part of the Mithi River widening initiative, the Dharavi flyover, which connects Bandra and Dharavi, is being rebuilt in two phases to minimise the obstruction of water flow. The river outlet near the outfall is also being expanded to enable smoother discharge into the sea.
The first phase is nearly 90% complete, and authorities are targeting full completion by November 30. Once the southside lanes of the bridge are opened, vehicles will get direct access to the flyover towards Mahim Causeway, significantly easing traffic movement. Work on the second phase is expected to begin soon, with an 18-month completion target.
In Worli, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is constructing a bridge over a nullah to link E. Moses Road and Dr. Annie Besant Road directly. This project is designed to reduce congestion in Worli Naka, Mahalaxmi, and Lower Parel. Currently, 30% of the work is completed, with the bridge slated for delivery by December 2026. Abhijeet Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), stated, “Officials have been instructed to secure the traffic department’s No Objection Certificate (NOC) and all other necessary permissions well in advance.” He further stressed the importance of meeting deadlines to ensure citizens do not face inconvenience.
Simultaneously, the BMC is reconstructing the Bandra skywalk between Bandra Railway Station and the MHADA office, following High Court directives. With nearly 80% work already complete, the civic body aims to reopen the skywalk before December 31. Bangar cautioned that strict action would be taken against the contractor if the remaining work is not finished within three months.
These projects together mark a significant step in easing Mumbai’s traffic bottlenecks and strengthening its transport infrastructure.
