BMC To Install Bio-Toilets Along Mumbai Coastal Road Promenade

September 19, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to install six bio-toilets along the newly opened Mumbai Coastal Road promenade, addressing a key facility gap for the thousands of visitors flocking to the scenic walkway.

As the promenade lacks a conventional sewer line network, the bio-toilets will operate on septic tank–based systems. They will be located close to Public Underpasses (PUPs), which connect the arterial road to the promenade, providing much-needed convenience to both tourists and residents.

The promenade, extending 7.47 kilometres from Priyadarshini Park to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, has rapidly become a popular attraction. Two sections were opened to the public on August 15: a 2.75-kilometre stretch from Tata Garden to Haji Ali, and a 2.5-kilometre section between Lovegrove Nullah (Worli Gutter) and B.M. Thackeray Chowk. Footfall has steadily increased since the inauguration and is expected to rise further after the monsoon.

In June, the Coastal Road department requested the Solid Waste Management (SWM) wing of the BMC to arrange for bio-toilets at four sites. Locations finalised include PUP No. 4 Akruti Parking near Mahalaxmi Temple, PUP No. 6 Haji Ali Junction, PUP No. 11 opposite Worli Dairy, and PUP No. 14 north of Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk on Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road. “Construction work has already started and will be completed in two weeks,” confirmed Dr Ashiwini Joshi, Additional Municipal Commissioner (City).

Security is also being strengthened. The Maharashtra Security Board (MSB) will deploy 12 personnel per shift, across three shifts daily, for the next six months. In addition, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), will develop 53 hectares of reclaimed land and assume responsibility for the long-term upkeep of the promenade, landscaped park and median for the next 30 years.
