Mumbai commuters to gain faster access with new CSMT Metro 3 connection

September 27, 2025: Mumbai commuters are set to experience smoother journeys as Metro Line 3 prepares to integrate directly with the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway station via a newly constructed subway. The link is expected to significantly improve connectivity to South Mumbai, including key destinations such as Cuffe Parade and Mantralaya.

The integration will allow passengers arriving on local trains at CSMT to directly access the Metro 3 corridor without leaving the station premises. The subway originates from Platform 1, at the Harbour Line exit, offering a seamless transfer and reducing walking time. For daily commuters, this promises faster and more convenient travel from the city’s central hub to its southern business and administrative districts.

Metro Line 3 will serve several major stations, including Science Museum, Mahalaxmi, Mumbai Central, Girgaon, Kalbadevi, CSMT, Hutatma Chowk, Churchgate, Vidhan Bhavan and Cuffe Parade. A 9.8-km section between Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Worli, featuring six stations, has already been opened to the public. The remaining stretch from Worli to Cuffe Parade, covering 10.99 km, will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister, enabling travel from Aarey to Colaba in just one hour. This journey currently takes between two to three hours by road.

The CSMT–Metro 3 subway has been designed with escalators and lifts to ensure ease of movement between the railway and metro stations. However, concerns remain about potential hawker encroachments. Commuters have pointed to the overcrowding in existing subways at CSMT and Churchgate, urging authorities to ensure proper regulation.

Despite these challenges, the project marks a major milestone in Mumbai’s public transport expansion, promising faster, safer and more efficient travel while strengthening links between residential areas and business districts.
