October 3, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has invited bids worth ₹2,200 crore for two major infrastructure initiatives in Malad, aimed at easing chronic traffic congestion and improving connectivity across the western suburbs. Both projects are targeted for completion by 2028.
The centrepiece is a proposed cable-stayed vehicular bridge linking Lagoon Road to Infiniti Mall. Estimated at over Rs 1,700 crore, the bridge will be 380 metres long and 36 metres wide, directly connecting Malad West with Malvani. Long anticipated by residents, it is expected to significantly reduce bottlenecks in one of Mumbai’s most densely populated zones.
The second scheme involves an elevated road built over the Ramchandra nullah at a cost of around Rs 400 crore. The stretch will connect MDP Road to Ryan International School, providing easier access from the rear of Evershine Nagar to Atharva College, thereby improving daily travel for residents and students.
Currently, commuters between Andheri and Malad — a distance of roughly 12 km — are restricted to Link Road, SV Road, or the Western Express Highway, all of which are heavily congested. The vehicular bridge proposal, originally conceived in the BMC’s Development Plan 2034, was revived in 2021 and has since gathered momentum. Officials confirmed the bridge will feature two lanes in each direction and extend from behind Infiniti Mall towards Andheri Back Road, traversing a hectare of mangroves and crossing the Poisar River.
The wider plan also includes a new traffic arm from Charkop Junction to Ryan International School and the widening of Malad-Marve Road by 3.65 metres from Mahakali Nagar Junction to Mith Chowky.
Environmental clearance has been secured from the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority, with around 200 mangroves affected. Union Minister and North Mumbai MP Piyush Goyal has backed the projects, highlighting their role in decongesting Mith Chowky and Evershine Nagar, especially as the coastal road extension progresses.
