October 24, 2025: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will provide Rs 100 crore to the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) in exchange for 83 houses meant for residents affected by the Prabhadevi bridge demolition.
MHADA had earlier submitted a list of 119 available houses to MMRDA for the rehabilitation of those impacted by the demolition of the bridge near Prabhadevi railway station. Out of these, MMRDA has selected 83 units. The bridge, which will be removed to make way for the Worli-Shivdi elevated link road, is part of a major infrastructure project connecting the Bandra-Worli Sea Link to the Atal Setu.
Initially, 19 buildings were expected to be affected by the bridge’s construction. However, after a change in design, 17 of those structures were saved. Only two buildings — Haji Noorani and Laxmi Niwas — will now face demolition. A total of 83 residents from these two structures will be permanently relocated.
While plans were in place to offer them houses in Kurla, many residents have requested alternative accommodation in nearby areas. MHADA has therefore identified additional flats available through the redevelopment of its cessed buildings in the Prabhadevi Pool area. These will be allotted to the displaced residents.
According to officials, “Out of the 119 houses proposed, MMRDA has shown interest in 83 units. These will be handed over to project-affected persons, and MHADA will receive Rs 100 crore in return.”
The initiative ensures that rehabilitation takes place close to the original neighborhood, easing relocation challenges for residents while facilitating progress on the crucial Worli-Shivdi link road project — an important connector between Mumbai’s central and southern zones.
