Japanese Urban Experts Visit MHADA, Explore Ties For Mumbai’s Next Growth Chapter

October 28, 2025: A high-level Japanese delegation from the Global Affairs Department of Japan’s Urban Renaissance Agency (UR) visited the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) headquarters in Bandra (East) to explore potential collaboration in affordable housing and urban redevelopment.

The delegation, led by Okamura Tomohito, Director, Global Affairs Department, UR, was received by Sanjeev Jaiswal (IAS), Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of MHADA. The visit marked a key step toward strengthening India–Japan cooperation in sustainable urban development.

During the meeting, the delegation reviewed MHADA’s major initiatives in housing, redevelopment, and cluster development, as well as the implementation of Growth Hub projects across Mumbai. Jaiswal highlighted MHADA’s transformative impact on Mumbai’s housing landscape, noting that its redevelopment projects are “delivering modern, dignified homes to thousands of citizens while redefining the city’s skyline.”

He presented flagship projects such as the B.D.D. Chawls Redevelopment Project, which will provide two-bedroom homes to over 16,000 families, and the Motilal Nagar Redevelopment Project in Goregaon—India’s second-largest redevelopment initiative featuring 1,600 sq. ft. homes. Other ongoing projects include those at Punjabi Colony (GTB Nagar), Siddharth Nagar, Abhyudaya Nagar, Poonam Nagar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar, Worli Adarsh Nagar, and Bandra Reclamation, collectively expected to add nearly six lakh new homes to Maharashtra’s housing stock.

The Japanese delegation also showed strong interest in the Kamathipura Cluster Redevelopment Project, envisioned to provide 500 sq. ft. homes to 8,000 families while preserving the area’s heritage.

Jaiswal emphasized that MHADA’s collaboration with UR could unlock new opportunities for sustainable, inclusive urban growth. In response, Okamura Tomohito commended MHADA’s efforts and reiterated Japan’s commitment to supporting India’s urban transformation.

“The visit concluded with both sides expressing optimism about future collaborations that could leverage Japanese expertise and Indian experience to create affordable, sustainable, and world-class urban spaces,” said an official.
