Mumbai Boosts Green Mobility With 157 New Electric Buses For BEST Fleet

October 31, 2025: In a major push toward sustainable urban transport, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated 157 new electric buses for Mumbai’s BEST fleet at the Colaba depot. He emphasized that strengthening the city’s bus network is crucial to complement the metro and suburban railway systems. Fadnavis also directed BEST to improve its financial sustainability by ensuring that at least 40% of total revenue comes from non-fare sources, noting that “long-term sustainability depends on such diversification.”

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde lauded the initiative, calling it a significant step towards building an eco-friendly and comfortable public transport system. “Nearly three lakh passengers use BEST services every day, and this expansion will directly improve their travel experience,” he said. Shinde added that the government has already infused Rs 3,400 crore into the system, with an additional Rs 1,000 crore allocated this year to strengthen operations.

The newly added fleet comprises 122 buses from PMI, leased through Mumbadevi Mobility Pvt Ltd, and 35 from Olectra, hired via EV Trans Maharashtra Pvt Ltd. These additions bring Mumbai’s total electric bus count to over 700 within BEST’s 2,660-strong fleet.

Fadnavis reaffirmed the government’s plan to introduce 5,000 electric buses in phases, aligning with the state’s 2022 EV policy, which targets 25% electrification of public bus fleets by 2025. He also noted that expanding non-fare income would include redeveloping depots and renting commercial spaces to reduce dependence on subsidies.

BEST, one of Mumbai’s oldest transport undertakings, has faced challenges like declining ridership and high costs. The electric bus expansion marks a pivotal step in revitalizing the network while promoting clean, energy-efficient mobility and reducing urban carbon emissions across Maharashtra.
