November 06, 2025: Mumbai’s infrastructure landscape is set for a major transformation with the construction of a new double-deck Elphinstone Bridge, replacing the 112-year-old structure that connects Prabhadevi and Parel. Designed and executed by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), the project will be among the city’s most advanced multi-level corridors, following the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road’s (SCLR) double-deck section near Kurla LTT.
The new bridge forms a vital link in the Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector, being developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to connect the Atal Setu, Coastal Road, and Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Once operational, it will provide a signal-free travel route across Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs, easing chronic congestion along the Parel-Prabhadevi belt.
The Rs 167-crore project, slated for completion by 2027, will feature two levels:
The lower deck will cater to local east-west traffic, offering two lanes in each direction and pedestrian walkways.
The upper deck will integrate directly with the Sewri-Worli Connector, linking to key arterial routes like the Eastern Freeway, Coastal Road, and Sea Link.
To ensure minimal disruption to train services, the span crossing the Central and Western Railway lines will use open-web steel girders, allowing faster night-time installations with wider clearances. The bridge will measure 132 metres in length and 17 metres in width, wider than the existing 13-metre structure.
At the Sewri end, where it connects to Atal Setu, the bridge will rise 21 metres above ground, making it one of Mumbai’s highest road overbridges. Once complete, the new Elphinstone Bridge will stand as an engineering landmark—improving mobility, safety, and connectivity between Mumbai’s core business districts and coastal infrastructure.
