December 11, 2025: The proposed Kalyan–Latur Expressway has taken a major step forward, with officials projecting that the new corridor will cut travel time between the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Latur from 10–11 hours to about four. Designed as a high-speed road link, the expressway is expected to boost trade, daily commuting and long-distance connectivity across central Maharashtra.
The corridor will span around 442 km, of which nearly 400 km will form the core Kalyan–Latur route. Beyond Latur, the alignment will extend towards the Maharashtra–Karnataka border, improving access for travellers and freight operators heading to Mumbai and major cities along the way.
The long-discussed project progressed during a review meeting in Nagpur, where Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis granted in-principle approval. Following this, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will prepare a detailed proposal and submit it for cabinet clearance. Officials expect the Detailed Project Report, approvals and preliminary groundwork to take 12 to 18 months, after which construction can begin.
Early alignment plans show the expressway starting from Kalyan, passing through Malshej Ghat and moving on to Ahmednagar, Beed, Manjarsumba, Ambajogai and ultimately Latur. MSRDC has said the corridor will play a vital role in accelerating connectivity and economic activity across these districts. A key engineering challenge is the proposed 8-km tunnel through Malshej Ghat, intended to overcome terrain constraints and ensure faster movement.
The expressway will also integrate with the upcoming Virar–Alibaug Multi-Modal Corridor, offering smoother travel for both commuters and freight between Mumbai’s periphery and Marathwada. Part of MSRDC’s broader plan to develop 4,217 km of high-capacity corridors, the project currently carries a cost estimate of Rs 35,000 crore, though the final figure will be confirmed after the DPR is completed.
With in-principle approval secured, the Kalyan–Latur Expressway now moves firmly into the planning phase, set to become a transformative road link for Maharashtra.
