December 20, 2025: The redevelopment of Terminal 1 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has been deferred to 2030 as part of a coordinated capacity expansion strategy for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The announcement was made by Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), ahead of the opening of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on December 25. AAHL controls both Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), which operates CSMIA, and Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited (NMIAL).
Earlier this year, in January, MIAL had stated that redevelopment of Terminal 1 would begin in November and be completed by 2028–29. Under that plan, the existing terminal structure was to be demolished in phases, with some flight operations shifted to Terminal 2 at CSMIA and to NMIA during the transition period.
Explaining the revised timeline, Adani said the decision was closely tied to the phased ramp-up of capacity at the Navi Mumbai airport. “The decision is linked to Navi Mumbai’s phased capacity build-up. The existing capacity of terminal 1 at NMIA is 2 crore passengers and the same is expected to be achieved in one-and-a-half years.” He added that structural strengthening work at CSMIA’s Terminal 1 has already begun and will continue until NMIA’s Terminal 2 and second runway become operational, ensuring adequate system-wide capacity during the transition.
Sources said the redevelopment of CSMIA’s Terminal 1 is now expected to be completed by 2033–34. Once rebuilt, the terminal will primarily handle domestic flights, while also being designed to allow future integration of international operations. Planned upgrades include the introduction of district cooling systems, a revamped baggage handling mechanism, and significant improvements to both airside and landside airport operations.
According to the redevelopment blueprint shared earlier this year, the upgraded terminal will offer seamless multimodal connectivity, including direct access to the metro network and underground bus facilities, aimed at improving passenger experience once the project is eventually taken up.
