December 27, 2025: Mumbai suburban train services are set to face major disruptions as Western Railway suspends between 320 and 350 local trains daily from December 26 to 29 for critical construction work on a new railway line. An additional round of cancellations is scheduled for January 10 to complete remaining tasks, authorities said.
The disruptions are part of a 30-day major block imposed between Kandivli and Borivli stations, aimed at installing a dedicated sixth railway line. This project is designed to separate suburban and long-distance train operations, improving efficiency and reducing congestion on the busy Western Line.
Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, told PTI that the work primarily involves non-linking activities, such as upgrades to the signalling system. He emphasized that these operations are scheduled mostly during late-night and early-morning hours to minimize impact on passengers. The project is part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) and includes laying a dedicated sixth line between Borivali and Mumbai Central. Once completed, a 3 to 3.5-km segment between Kandivli and Borivli will become operational.
Construction began on December 20 and is expected to conclude by January 18, 2026. Upon completion, the new line is expected to significantly ease congestion and enhance the suburban travel experience across the city.
Western Railway operates over 1,400 local trains daily, connecting Churchgate in South Mumbai to Dahanu in Palghar district, covering more than 125 kilometers.
Commuters are advised to plan their journeys, as the train cancellations are likely to cause crowded platforms and necessitate alternative travel arrangements during the affected period.
This infrastructure upgrade is part of broader efforts to modernise Mumbai’s suburban rail network and improve overall operational efficiency while addressing the city’s growing commuter demand.
