Reconstructed Bandra East Skywalk Opens, Easing Pedestrian Movement Across Western Express Highway

January 28, 2026: The reconstructed skywalk connecting Bandra Railway Station (East) to Kalanagar Junction on the Western Express Highway has been opened to the public, providing much-needed relief to daily commuters in the area. The facility was inaugurated on Monday and is expected to significantly improve pedestrian movement across one of Mumbai’s busiest transit zones.

The new skywalk has been developed to ease access for citizens travelling between Bandra station, Bandra Court, the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), MHADA offices and the District Collector’s office at Bandra (East). With direct connectivity to the foot overbridge at Bandra Railway Station, the skywalk allows pedestrians to cross the Western Express Highway safely without navigating heavy traffic at road level.

Inaugurating the structure, Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar said the skywalk would offer major relief to pedestrians by improving safety and reducing travel time. He noted that the direct linkage to the railway station’s foot overbridge would streamline movement and help minimise congestion on Anant Kanekar Road. According to Shelar, the project is expected to play a key role in easing crowding and improving overall traffic flow in the Bandra (East) area.

The newly constructed skywalk measures 680 metres in length and has an average width of 5.40 metres, allowing for smoother pedestrian circulation even during peak hours. To ensure convenient access from different points, four staircases have been provided along the route. In addition, two escalators have been installed to make the facility more user-friendly, especially for senior citizens and those with mobility challenges.

For enhanced safety and monitoring, the civic body has equipped the skywalk with 14 CCTV cameras. Officials said the surveillance system will help ensure security and deter misuse of the facility.

Construction of the skywalk posed several challenges due to its location above busy roads. Work had to be carried out during limited midnight hours because of heavy traffic on the Western Express Highway, intense pedestrian movement on Anant Kanekar Road below, and the need to relocate multiple utility lines. Despite these constraints, the project was completed within the stipulated timeframe, Shelar said, marking a key improvement in Bandra’s pedestrian infrastructure.
