Maharashtra govt plans to set up third agency for road work

Despite having two agencies, including the Public Works Department and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, to undertake road construction and repair works in the state, the Maharashtra government has now decided to set up another entity called the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation, to carry out the work

The agency, which has been set up with an authorised capital of Rs 100 crore, will report to the state PWD. Its main task will be to ensure that the roads in the state are maintained and are pothole-free. The corporation can also work in states other than Maharashtra on PPP mode. Maharashtra has an extensive network of roads of about 3 lakh kilometres. Of these, the PWD has 1 lakh km of major state highways, state highways and district highways under it
