To alleviate parking shortages, Mumbai Airport intends to move charter, private, and turboprop aircraft to Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) before the end of the year. General aviation aircraft are currently parked in far-off berths close to the runway at Mumbai Airport.
According to a representative of Adani Airports Holdings Ltd, “NMIA will be operational in 2025, featuring modern aviation infrastructure, including hangars for private and charter aircraft.”
The goal of the move is to maximise Mumbai Airport’s aeronautical infrastructure. After disembarkation, parked aircraft will relocate to NMIA or other sites, although the city airport will continue to be open to civilian aviation.
By the end of 2025, NMIA’s general aviation terminal, parking lots, and hangars should be ready to accommodate domestic flights. NMIA’s design will solve issues with Mumbai airport’s poor parking bay placements, which necessitate planes being towed for effective space utilisation, according to Capt. Rajesh Bali, Managing Director of the Business Aircraft Operators Association (BAOA).
There are now 24 general aviation aircraft based at Mumbai Airport. Last year, BAOA also voiced concerns with NMIA’s hangar operations tender process, calling for greater transparency and clarity.
This change is a step in the right direction for improving operating efficiency and reducing congestion for private aviation in the area.
