BMC To Enhance Lighting At Marine Drive With LED Fixtures

To handle the high volume of daily traffic, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to improve lighting along Mumbai’s famous Marine Drive. The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) and the Air India building will have 110 LED light fixtures fitted over the course of the following month.

One of Mumbai’s most well-liked waterfronts, Marine Drive, attracts thousands of visitors and residents, including those who attend events and take morning walks. Nonetheless, local authorities have admitted that the street illumination is currently insufficient, especially during events with large crowds, such as cricket matches at Wankhede Stadium. To maintain public safety during such events, the BMC now depends on temporary lighting sets.

“Marine Drive experiences large crowds daily, and while we install temporary lights for major events, we are now planning to set up permanent LED fixtures under trees along the promenade. This will improve both visibility and public safety,” a senior BMC official told The Indian Express.

Installing LED lights with wattages ranging from 30 to 40 under 55 trees along the promenade is part of the Rs 17-lakh project. These lights will improve the area’s aesthetic appeal in addition to improving visibility. However, the entire three-kilometre stretch of Marine Drive, originally constructed in 1915, will not be covered under this initiative.

Meanwhile, BMC is also working on a 7.5-kilometre-long boardwalk between Breach Candy and Worli as part of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP). Spanning 70 hectares, the upcoming promenade will feature tree-lined pathways, a dedicated cycle track, and ample space for public recreation.

The municipal organisation is currently completing the project’s final phases, which include paver block installation and concrete. The promenade is anticipated to be finished and open to the public by March of this year.
