BMC Races Against Monsoon To Complete Key Railway Flyovers In Mumbai

In a determined push to accelerate critical infrastructure works before the onset of the monsoon, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has intensified efforts to fast-track the construction of key railway flyovers in Mumbai. A high-level joint review meeting was held on Thursday under the leadership of Joint Police Commissioner (Traffic) Anil Kumbhare, where progress on the Bellasis, Carnac, and Sion flyovers was closely evaluated. The meeting brought together senior officials from the BMC, traffic police, and the railway department to streamline coordination and overcome logistical bottlenecks.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar stressed the urgency of timely execution, setting firm deadlines for each project—Bellasis Bridge by November 30, 2025, Carnac Bridge by June 10, 2025, and Sion Flyover by May 31, 2026. The Sion Flyover project includes relocation of BEST bus services, tree trimming approvals, and the phased demolition of the existing bridge post-monsoon, with public underpass and approach road construction planned through mid-2026.

Meanwhile, the Bellasis Bridge project, originally slated for April 2026, is now being targeted for early completion by November 2025. Most obstructive structures have been cleared, and plans for rehabilitation of affected businesses are underway. In the case of the Carnac Bridge near Masjid Bunder station, eight pillars on the east side are complete, with five of the required 40 steel girders already delivered on site. Girders are set to be installed by May 2, while the concrete work within the railway zone is scheduled for completion by May 7. The full carriageway is expected to be operational by June 10.

It is believed that these developments are essential to alleviating Mumbai’s infamous traffic jams. With the monsoon quickly approaching, officials emphasised the importance of careful planning and cooperation with the Railways to guarantee that all infrastructure is finished on time.
