Mumbai’s traffic woes may ease soon, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) set to open a new underground subway in early May, according to a Lokmat report. The subway is a significant addition to the Mumbai Coastal Road project and is expected to alleviate congestion between Worli, Prabhadevi, Nariman Point, and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.
This new route will be the second underground connection in the Coastal Road network, following the undersea tunnel that links Marine Drive and Priyadarshini Park. Measuring approximately 520 metres, the subway is currently in its final phase of construction.
Strategically designed, the subway aims to improve connectivity between South Mumbai and the Western Suburbs via the Sewri-Worli Connector. It will begin at J. K. Kapoor Chowk near Worli Seaface and end at Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk, offering commuters direct access to Nariman Point in the south or the Western Suburbs via the Coastal Road.
Vehicles arriving from the Sewri-Worli Connector will be able to seamlessly merge onto the Coastal Road, significantly saving time and fuel for daily commuters. In a bid to further enhance traffic flow, the BMC is also preparing to open the final inter-lane of the Coastal Road project—from Baroda Palace to Lotus Jetty—completing the planned network of 18 inter-lanes.
Recently, concerns emerged on social media over alleged water leakage in one of the tunnels. However, the BMC clarified that the tunnel’s fireboard covering is moisture-resistant, and what appeared to be leakage was merely dust and humidity combined with unpainted patchwork—not a structural issue.
This subway forms a crucial part of the BMC’s larger vision to transform urban mobility in Mumbai. Through a network of modern tunnels, inter-lanes, and fast-track connectors, the Mumbai Coastal Road project aims to deliver safer, quicker, and more sustainable commutes. Once operational, the subway is anticipated to provide much-needed relief to thousands of motorists travelling daily between South Mumbai and the suburbs.
