Kalwa Car Shed Barricaded For Railway Infrastructure Push

The road outside Kalwa station is being sealed and barricaded as part of Central Railway’s (CR) efforts to create a large wall and foot overbridge (FOB), which would put an end to the long-standing, albeit illegal, practice of boarding empty local trains from the rail car shed.

Thousands of commuters would board empty trains that left the auto shed for Thane, their official starting point, but Thane commuters used to gripe that even though the trains were supposedly from Thane, coaches would already be filled when they came from the shed.

The predicament of Kalwa commuters trying to join the train during the morning rush hour was brought to light by Mid-Day in February 2025. Many of them either got on an empty car shed train or drove to Thane, spending R40 to R45 per day, or they just waited it out.

An FOB connected to the current bridge at the station’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) end is planned. After a while of running parallel to the station, this bridge will cross the tracks of the car shed and come to rest in the west, close to the auto stand. As a result, getting into the station won’t require crossing the rails. At the same time, the old road is being walled up and will be sealed off completely after the FOB is opened to the public.

The majority of the FOB’s pillars appeared to be finished when Midday visited the station on Friday, and girders had been installed on the section of the bridge that ran parallel to the station. Work on the wall had also been done, and it was being kept in readiness.
