A significant step in the UK university’s international expansion was taken when the University of York announced that it would open its first abroad campus in Mumbai.
Professor Charlie Jeffrey, vice-chancellor of the University of York, spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the idea during the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES), which is currently taking place in Mumbai. The new campus was made possible by the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra Chief Minister.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Charlie Jeffery cited Mumbai’s expanding infrastructure as a major contributing element in an interview with ETEducation. “Mumbai has a real advantage because of the second major airport and the very quickly developing metro system,” he said.
However, infrastructure wasn’t the sole cause. Jeffery highlighted Maharashtra’s economic advantages, particularly in fields that fit York’s research agenda. “We examined industries like agri-tech and the creative industries, which are crucial for Maharashtra and important areas of research for us,” he said.
In order to establish solid ties with nearby businesses and communities, the institution is now organising its academic programs and going through regulatory procedures. According to Jeffrey, the Mumbai campus will try to closely match York’s purpose in terms of research and academia.
