Mumbai Suburban Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar officially opened the Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge, Andheri’s vital east-west link, on Sunday after several postponed deadlines.
The bridge’s second phase was officially inaugurated yesterday, following the first phase’s February 2024 opening. Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar described the second phase’s progress, saying, “Our original aim was to begin the second girder by October 2024 in order to finish the bridge by April 2025. The second girder was only launched in December 2024, though, because of delays. We were nevertheless able to complete the building by April 26, 2025.
The project was dubbed a “engineering marvel” by Shelar. It wasn’t simple to work over railway tracks. Through initiatives like the Worli-Sewri link, Atal Setu, and the Coastal Road, we’re connecting Mumbai with an emphasis on its infrastructure,” he stated. After being closed in November 2022, the bridge was finished in a record 28 months, according to local MLA Ameet Satam of Andheri West. Thanks to a leadership transition, this is one of BMC’s newest and fastest projects. Even after the bridge collapsed in 2018, the previous government postponed awarding tenders; in 2020, work began, a year later, according to Satam.
There will soon be more bridges.Bangar stated that Masjid Bunder’s Carnac Bridge and the Vikhroli East-West link would be finished by May 31 and June 10, 2025, respectively, before the monsoon season. It was made possible by civic activism.Credit should also be given to the watchful residents of Versova, Juhu, and Andheri, who diligently pursued the project through to its conclusion. MLA Satam praised their contribution to the project’s advancement.
