Mumbai’s First Cable-Stayed Reay Road Bridge to Open on May 13

On the evening of May 13, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will officially launch the Reay Road bridge in Mumbai.Another road overbridge over railway lines at Titwala will also be remotely opened from the location. The event is scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Since the previous bridge was demolished in February 2022 and the new one was finished in December 2024, the Reay Road bridge is the city’s first cable-stayed road overbridge and one of the quickest to be finished. However, it had to wait almost half a year for its inauguration.
The rebuilt bridge features a pedestrian walkway and six lanes.

Valentine’s Day in 2022 marked the beginning of the cable-stayed bridge’s construction, which was finished in two years. The new bridge is a component of a citywide bridge renovation project. The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), also known as Maharail, has entered into a deal with the BMC and railroads to reconstruct century-old British bridges whose lifespan is nearly over, according to an official.

In order to create a new bridge next to the old one, which is then dismantled to make room for the new bridge, the goal is to reconstruct the old bridges into cable-stayed bridges without interfering with traffic.

According to Indian Roads Congress (IRC) regulations, the bridge structures would provide traffic to flow over Barrister Nath Pai Road’s underpass while maintaining the necessary vertical clearance for vehicles to pass under the Eastern Freeway. The world-class heritage building will also look better thanks to the new cable-stayed road overbridge. Furthermore, MRIDC has integrated a bridge health monitoring system to increase safety parameters and created architectural LED lighting for the planned bridge, which will boost its aesthetic appeal,” he continued.

The construction began on February 14, 2022.

The project is expected to cost Rs 273 crore.

The road bridge is 385 meters long and has two down ramps.

There are six lanes.

Project length overall: around 1.52 km
