The construction of the Charkop elevated road bridge, a key project to improve east-west connectivity in Mumbai’s western suburbs, has been officially delayed, with a new completion deadline set for June 2027, according to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Initially slated for completion by the end of 2025, the project, which commenced in December 2022, has faced delays due to design modifications and the challenges of relocating utilities.
The 3.4-kilometre elevated road is set to connect Malvani in Malad West to Charkop in Kandivali West, providing a vital alternative to the congested Link Road. This project is expected to ease traffic between Borivali and Malad, improving the daily commute for thousands of residents. The bridge is estimated to cost ₹620.15 crore and is being executed by J Kumar Infraprojects, a firm known for handling large-scale infrastructure projects in the city.
While originally conceived as a straightforward elevated road, the project has had to undergo significant design changes due to urban constraints and ground realities. MMRDA officials explained that these revisions were essential to meet engineering requirements and integrate the bridge with existing roads. The relocation of underground utilities, including water pipelines, electrical lines, and communication cables, has further slowed the process.
Despite the delays, the MMRDA confirmed that the technical groundwork has been completed, and work on key components of the bridge is progressing cautiously to avoid damaging critical infrastructure. Ensuring safety and long-term durability remains a top priority.
With the revised completion date of June 2027, the MMRDA aims to deliver a bridge that not only meets current transport needs but also supports long-term urban mobility goals. Once finished, the bridge is expected to significantly reduce congestion and travel time across the western suburbs.
