In a major step towards reshaping urban infrastructure and enhancing public welfare, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to advancing metro networks, reforming housing policy, and scaling up cleanliness initiatives.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Fadnavis shared key highlights from a high-level review meeting held at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai. The meeting was attended by Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, along with senior state officials and ministers, including Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Madhuri Misal.
Fadnavis announced plans to expand metro connectivity in major cities, notably Mumbai and Pune. He underscored the implementation of an integrated ticketing system, allowing commuters to travel seamlessly across railways, buses, and metro services—aimed at making urban transport more efficient.
The state has requested central government approval for two new metro corridors in Pune, proposing a 50:50 funding model. “While Maharashtra has thus far financed metro projects independently, partnership with the Centre will provide crucial financial support and expedite project delivery,” he noted.
Addressing Mumbai’s housing crisis, Fadnavis urged the Centre to revise the eligibility norms under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), stating that rigid criteria exclude many deserving families. He called for more flexible guidelines, particularly tailored for Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
Fadnavis also highlighted the state’s strategic use of AMRUT scheme funds to enhance urban services.
During the review, Maharashtra’s top rank in the 2023 Swachh Survekshan was applauded. Fadnavis reiterated his commitment to sanitation reforms and requested continued central support for implementation and funding.
The meeting also focused on resolving development bottlenecks and accelerating progress across sectors in line with Maharashtra’s broader urban development mission.
