Mumbai Metro Milestone: Line-9 Trial Run Begins On India’s First Double-Decker Corridor

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday inaugurated the trial run of Phase 1 of Metro Line-9, stretching from Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon in Thane district. This marks a significant milestone in enhancing mobility across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

This line is the first metro corridor to be introduced in Thane district.

Joining the Chief Minister at the event were Deputy Chief Minister and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) head Eknath Shinde, along with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.

Metro Line-9 is a groundbreaking double-decker project, uniquely combining a metro and a vehicular flyover on a shared viaduct – the first of its kind in the MMR. The initial 4.4-kilometre stretch runs through Dahisar (East), Pandurangwadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon.

The eagerly awaited line will provide crucial connectivity between Mira-Bhayandar and several key areas across Mumbai’s western and eastern suburbs, as well as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

According to an MMRDA statement, this new line is poised to transform commuting for residents of Mira-Bhayandar, offering direct access to the international airport (via Lines 7 and 7A), Andheri (West) (via Line 2B), Ghatkopar (via Lines 7 and 1), and the Link Road (via Line 2A at Dahisar East). Future expansions will connect the line to Thane (via Line-10 at Miragaon) and Vasai-Virar (via the forthcoming Line-13).
