Reay Road Bridge Opens, Enhancing South Mumbai Connectivity

Mumbai is set to unveil a significant addition to its urban infrastructure with the inauguration of the Reay Road Bridge on 13 May 2025. This landmark development marks the city’s first land-based cable-stayed road overbridge, reflecting a milestone in modern engineering.

Spanning 385 metres, the six-lane structure features dedicated pedestrian walkways and is designed to improve connectivity between Byculla and Mazgaon while easing traffic congestion in surrounding areas. The project commenced on 14 February 2022 following the demolition of a century-old British-era bridge. Although construction was initially expected to finish earlier, it was completed in December 2024, with the formal opening delayed until May.

Developed at an estimated cost of ₹273 crore, the bridge is a joint effort by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and Indian Railways. Its central pylon cable-stayed design minimises the need for multiple piers, thereby reducing disruption to underground utilities and allowing for smoother traffic movement below.

The bridge also boasts architectural LED lighting to enhance its visual appeal and features a bridge health monitoring system to ensure ongoing safety and maintenance. Strategically situated, it connects Mahul Road near the Eastern Freeway to Barrister Nath Pai Marg, providing a more direct route expected to reduce travel time for both commuters and goods transport.

Furthermore, the structure maintains the required vertical clearance under the Eastern Freeway in accordance with Indian Roads Congress standards. The inauguration ceremony, scheduled for 7 PM, will also include the remote unveiling of another overbridge at Titwala.

As Mumbai continues its urban evolution, the Reay Road Bridge stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to advanced infrastructure, blending functionality with architectural sophistication.
