Mumbai Coastal Road To Undergo Major Green Transformation

Mumbai’s iconic Coastal Road is poised for a transformative green makeover, with an estimated investment of ₹400 crore funded entirely through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has recommended Reliance Industries for this large-scale greening project, following a competitive selection process involving five major corporations, including Jindal, Raymond, Vedanta, and Torres.

The Coastal Road, spanning 10.58 km from Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, is now fully operational. The greening effort aims to enhance the 70-hectare corridor with extensive landscaping, Miyawaki urban forests, butterfly gardens, yoga pathways, musical fountains, open-air gyms, amphitheatres, senior citizens’ zones, and children’s play areas. Cycling and jogging tracks will also be integrated, creating a seamless, active urban space for all.

This initiative reflects Mumbai’s evolving vision of becoming an environmentally sustainable, citizen-centric city. It aligns with ongoing projects such as the 7.5 km public promenade modelled on Marine Drive and the beautification of a five-hectare median by Tata Sons.Importantly, Reliance Industries will not seek ownership, revenue rights, or branding privileges, acting solely as a steward of the public asset.

This approach marks a significant shift in urban policy, where CSR is leveraged not just for compliance but as a tool for sustainable urban development with social and environmental benefits. The final administrative approval is expected shortly, with detailed plans to be submitted soon after. Implementation is likely to begin before year-end, promising Mumbai’s 20 million residents greater access to green, open spaces. If realised as planned, the Coastal Road will emerge as the city’s green lung and a model for equitable urban renewal.
