The upgradation of four key stations in Mumbai—Chinchpokli, Parel, Vadala Road, and Matunga—under the Central Railway’s Mumbai Division has been completed as part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. With a combined investment of over ₹71 crore, these redevelopments aim to enhance passenger experience and transform local transit infrastructure. The foundation stones for the project were laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On 22 May 2025, the Prime Minister will inaugurate 103 redeveloped railway stations across India, including 12 under Central Railway. Among these are Parel, Vadala Road, and Matunga stations, serving Mumbai’s bustling suburban network.Chinchpokli Station, which accommodates over 36,000 daily commuters, has been upgraded at a cost of ₹11.81 crore. Enhancements include renovated booking offices, new flooring, seating, drinking water facilities, artistic 3D wall art, and vertical gardens.Parel Station, used by nearly 48,000 passengers daily, saw improvements worth ₹19.41 crore.
The station now features a modern building, elevated parking, improved drainage, vertical gardens, and upgraded landscaping.Vadala Road Station, handling over 1.3 lakh passengers daily, underwent one of the most extensive upgrades. Renovations include improved platforms, drainage systems, toilet facilities, and refurbished entryways.Matunga Station, known as India’s first all-women-operated station, received upgrades worth ₹17.28 crore.
The revamp focused on sustainability and inclusivity, with new flooring, Divyangjan-friendly features, renovated heritage structures, and vibrant aesthetic elements.Central Railway officials stated that all upgrades were completed within 15 months. “The Amrit Bharat Scheme is not merely about infrastructure but about delivering safer, cleaner, and more accessible transit for all,” said a senior official.This redevelopment marks a new era in Mumbai’s urban mobility, aligning with the vision of a future-ready, inclusive railway system.
