Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar Redevelopment Kicks Off As SRA Clears Way For MMRDA

In a significant development for Ghatkopar’s Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is set to receive a cleared plot of land from the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), potentially by the end of this month, according to sources. This land handover will mark the commencement of MMRDA’s first major in-situ housing project designed to rehabilitate thousands of slum residents.

Spanning 33.15 hectares, the redevelopment will be carried out in four phases. The initial phase is scheduled to begin on a 17-acre site where the SRA has already cleared 4,053 slum structures. Once contractors are appointed, construction is expected to commence, with the first phase aiming to provide housing for approximately 8,500 residents.

The SRA has finalised a list of 14,500 eligible families who will be relocated under this scheme. Following the formal transfer of land, the MMRDA will move ahead with detailed construction planning and execution.

Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar currently consists of an estimated 16,000 slum structures. This redevelopment initiative is a part of the government’s broader strategy to upgrade urban housing and infrastructure across Mumbai.

Simultaneously, the MMRDA is also progressing on the extension of the Eastern Freeway, a key infrastructure project that will enhance connectivity between Mumbai and Thane. Together, these efforts represent a major urban transformation aimed at not only providing dignified living conditions but also improving regional transit links.

The redevelopment of Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar stands as a milestone in Mumbai’s urban planning, reflecting a shift towards integrated, large-scale rehabilitation models led by the state. Residents and authorities alike view the project as a much-needed step towards inclusive development and sustainable city growth.
