Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday announced that Mumbai’s historic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) is being redeveloped into the country’s most modern railway station. Speaking at a railway event in Parel, Fadnavis revealed that the ambitious project, estimated at ₹2,800 crore, aims to transform the iconic terminus into a world-class transport hub with airport-like facilities, greatly enhancing the passenger experience.
The redevelopment of CSMT is part of a broader initiative under the Union Government’s Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier in the day. Joining virtually from Bikaner, Rajasthan, the prime minister launched the redevelopment of 103 railway stations across 86 districts in 18 states and union territories, including 12 stations in Maharashtra.
Among the 12 in Maharashtra, five stations each are in the Mumbai and Bhusaval divisions, and two are located in Pune, as per a Central Railway press release. The event at Parel was also attended by Governor CP Radhakrishnan and Central Railway General Manager Dharam Veer Meena, along with local representatives across various stations.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme envisions the modernisation of 1,337 stations across India, blending state-of-the-art infrastructure with regional culture. Stations are being equipped with improved amenities, sustainable designs, and accessible features for Divyangjan (persons with disabilities).
In addition to inaugurating the redeveloped Deshnoke Station in Rajasthan, PM Modi also flagged off the new Bikaner-Mumbai Express train. The Prime Minister interacted with schoolchildren and visited the Karni Mata Temple in Deshnoke during the ceremony.
This nationwide upgrade, valued at over ₹26,000 crore, marks a significant step towards creating a more efficient, inclusive, and modern railway network for India’s growing passenger base.
