Dharavi Emerging As Mumbai’s Hub For Sustainable Urban Development

Plans are progressing steadily to extend Metro Line 11 (Wadala–CSMT) directly into Dharavi, a vital step to enhance connectivity and promote sustainable urban development. This extension, a key component of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP), will complement the ongoing construction of Metro Line 3 (Colaba–BKC–Aarey), which is set to pass through the bustling neighbourhood. Together, these lines will create an integrated transport network crucial for building a zero-net carbon, equitable Mumbai.

The planned extension of Line 11 includes two stations—one within Dharavi and another in Sion—forming a strategic interchange with the existing Line 3 station. This design will enable seamless north-south and east-west travel across the city, easing congestion, reducing vehicular emissions, and encouraging eco-friendly public transport.

Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL), responsible for Metro Line 3, will also oversee the construction of Line 11, with an estimated budget of ₹16,000 crore. The proposed ‘Dharavi Central Metro Station’ is being planned as a multi-level interchange, acting as a key hub to cut travel times for commuters travelling between eastern suburbs, the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

The project goes beyond rail connectivity, with plans for integrated feeder buses, pedestrian-friendly pathways, and cycling infrastructure to ensure excellent last-mile connectivity. This approach aims to provide safe, accessible, and gender-neutral transport options for all residents, regardless of socio-economic status or mobility.

For Dharavi, improved metro connectivity will unlock socio-economic opportunities by providing easier access to jobs, education, and healthcare. This extension promises to foster inclusive growth, reduce private vehicle dependence, and contribute to a cleaner, greener Mumbai, setting a precedent for future sustainable urban development.
