Mumbai Braces For Monsoon With Incomplete Roadworks

Despite the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) setting a 31st May deadline for completion of concrete roadworks across the city, many stretches remain unfinished, sparking concern among residents as the monsoon rains begin early. Originally, the civic body had aimed to finish cement laying on major arterial roads by 20th May, ahead of the seasonal downpour. However, post-rain inspections in several neighbourhoods revealed unfinished works, dug-up paths, and delayed progress.

In Andheri West’s SVP Nagar, one road — Mahadeshwar Lane — was only completed following media coverage and persistent citizen complaints. Residents noted improvements in walkability and reduced waterlogging, offering temporary relief. But elsewhere, like adjacent crossroads in the same area, work remains stagnant. Workers have blamed erratic weather and labour shortages, further delaying timelines.

The issue is not limited to delays. Poor execution and shortcuts have resulted in immediate deterioration. On Road No. 5 in TPS Colony, an asphalt layer—used in place of concrete—has already developed potholes and cracks. Meanwhile, other streets were patched with loose soil that has now sunk due to rain, creating hazardous slopes.

Experts have criticised the lack of quality control and urgency that typically precedes the monsoon. “When roads are rushed without proper curing, premature damage is inevitable,” said a civic engineer. Improperly disposed sludge from stormwater drains also threatens to clog systems again as rainwater washes it back.

Although BMC officials cite the monsoon’s early onset—16 days ahead of schedule—as a challenge, critics argue that warnings from the India Meteorological Department were ample. For a city aiming to become climate-resilient and carbon-neutral, delays and substandard work compromise both public trust and safety. As the monsoon intensifies, the real test lies in whether BMC can deliver on its promises with effective, lasting results.
