Mumbai Metro Lines 2A & 7 Roll Out Monsoon Safety Measures

In light of frequent disruptions caused by monsoon weather, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) have introduced a series of proactive measures to bolster infrastructure and operational preparedness on Metro Lines 2A and 7.

The recent rainfall, which triggered delays on Metro Line 3, served as a stark reminder of the need for robust monsoon contingency plans. In response, wind velocity sensors have been installed at critical stations to collect real-time data, allowing the metro control centre to take timely decisions regarding train operations during inclement weather.

To alleviate crowding in flood-prone areas, service frequency has been increased. Additionally, over 64 high-definition CCTV cameras have been installed at each station to ensure commuter safety and continuous surveillance.

Comprehensive inspections have been carried out on electrical systems — including diesel generators, uninterruptible power supplies, lightning arrestors, and dewatering pumps — to ensure optimal performance during heavy rains. All trains have also undergone waterproofing tests to avoid leakage and maintain passenger comfort.

Infrastructure upkeep has been prioritised, with thorough cleaning of rainwater drainage systems, gutters, and sewers to prevent waterlogging. Electrical insulators and cables have been serviced to reduce the risk of outages.

On the ground, dedicated nodal officers are coordinating local response teams. Pothole repair vehicles and pumps are strategically positioned near vulnerable zones, while traffic wardens manage pedestrian and vehicular flow around metro stations to avoid accidents in slippery conditions.

A 24/7 monsoon control room, directly linked to the city’s Disaster Management Cell, has been activated for real-time emergency response. Active helplines are also in place to assist passengers.

MMMOCL underscores that these measures are part of its ongoing commitment to safe, efficient, and sustainable urban transit.
