In a remarkable engineering achievement, eight colossal U-girders were successfully installed overnight at Kapurbawdi station, a vital interchange on the forthcoming Mumbai Metro Line 4, which will link Wadala to Gaimukh.
This operation, conducted by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) during the night between Monday and Tuesday, saw the placement of girders weighing nearly 98 metric tonnes each, totalling approximately 783 metric tonnes.
As reported by The Indian Express, the installation took place over two sections, supporting both the up and down corridors of the metro line. The operation was executed with precision and coordination, involving over 90 personnel, including riggers, labourers, traffic management officials, and crane operators, all working in tandem. The high-capacity cranes and multi-axle trailers used were integral to ensuring the smooth execution of the operation.
To minimise disruption, traffic management teams were deployed along Thane’s busy Ghodbunder Road, ensuring that road traffic continued with minimal interruption.
Kapurbawdi station, located on this critical thoroughfare, will serve as a multi-level interchange connecting Metro Lines 4 and 5, which will extend from Thane to Bhiwandi and Kalyan. Once operational, the 35.2 km elevated corridor will significantly reduce travel time across the east-west suburban stretch, cutting journey durations by up to 75%. In addition, it promises to provide a more eco-friendly and efficient alternative to road-based transport.
This installation marks a key milestone in the development of Mumbai’s metro infrastructure, underscoring the MMRDA’s commitment to accelerating public transport expansion in the city, while also enhancing connectivity and sustainability.
