June 18, 2025: Two years since Mumbai’s extensive road concretisation drive began, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has managed to complete 63% of the roads taken up in the first phase. As of June 10, 2024, work on 203.36 km out of the 320 km approved under Phase One has been completed.
The work order for the project was issued in January 2023. However, by June 2024, only 9% of the work had been finished in the first six months, with the remaining 54% progress achieved over the past year, according to official BMC data.
In total, 700 roads spanning 320 km were included in Phase One. Of these, 343 roads covering 101.67 km have been fully completed, while 239 roads amounting to 101.68 km have seen partial completion.
Owing to the onset of the monsoon, all road concreting work has now been paused. Civil works will resume post-monsoon, likely after the first week of October.
The BMC has divided the city’s road concretisation into two phases, with an overall cost of Rs 17,700 crore. In Phase Two, 1,421 roads totalling 378.36 km were sanctioned. As of now, 36.83% of this work—covering 139.38 km—has been completed. This includes 428 roads (84.33 km) fully finished and 375 roads (55.06 km) partially done.
Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani had earlier stated that by March 2026, BMC aims to complete 75% of Phase One and 50% of Phase Two.
Civic officials noted early monsoons this year prompted an earlier deadline of 20 May to ensure roads remain motorable. Challenges such as monsoonal delays and the risk of damaging underground utilities have contributed to the project’s slow pace, officials added.
