Carnac Bridge To Open This Week After Railway Nod, Easing Mumbai Traffic

June 15, 2025: The long-awaited reopening of the newly built Carnac Bridge in South Mumbai is scheduled for this week, following final clearance from the Central Railway. The original bridge, constructed in the 19th century and located near Masjid Railway Station, was demolished in November 2022 after it was deemed structurally unsafe during a critical inspection.

Construction of the replacement structure began promptly due to the bridge’s importance in easing traffic in key areas such as CSMT, Masjid Bunder, and Mohammed Ali Road. Although the main construction work was completed by 10 June, and a successful load test conducted on June 15, the bridge could not be opened until the Central Railway granted its No Objection Certificate (NOC). As 70 of the 328 total metres of the bridge fall within railway jurisdiction, clearance from railway authorities was mandatory. The BMC received this final approval on June 24.

The new bridge, built at an estimated cost of Rs 60 crore, is made of steel and features several modern upgrades. These include four vehicular lanes—twice the capacity of the old bridge—along with upgraded lighting and signage systems to ensure smooth and safe vehicular movement. The approach roads, managed by the BMC, cover 130 metres on the eastern side and 100 metres on the west.

According to Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), Mr Abhijeet Bangar, the opening of the bridge will significantly reduce traffic congestion in South Mumbai. With wider lanes and modern infrastructure, the new Carnac Bridge is expected to play a key role in improving overall urban mobility and commuter convenience in the region.

This infrastructure milestone marks a major step forward in the city’s efforts to modernise transport links and ease long-standing bottlenecks.
