June 25, 2025: The long-awaited reconstruction of Mumbai’s Sion Bridge is set to be completed by May 2026, according to civic officials overseeing the major infrastructure project. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in coordination with Indian Railways, confirmed that the vital east-west connector will be ready within the next year—a significant step forward in the city’s urban mobility strategy.
A crucial link for thousands of daily commuters travelling between Dharavi, Lal Bahadur Shastri Road, and adjacent neighbourhoods, the bridge is undergoing phased redevelopment following structural audits that identified critical vulnerabilities. The southern portion was declared structurally unsound, leading to its phased demolition and planned reconstruction.
Senior BMC officials report that the southern foot overbridge (FOB) is scheduled for completion by August 31, 2025. Following this, demolition of the southern span of the main bridge will commence alongside dismantling works beneath the existing structure.
The installation of vital iron girders forming the base of the new bridge deck will occur in two stages: the northern section by November 2025, and the southern section by January 2026. Deck construction and associated concrete work, under the purview of the railway authorities, will then proceed uninterrupted. Additionally, the approach roads linking the bridge to major traffic corridors such as Dharavi and Lal Bahadur Shastri Road are expected to be fully completed by March 2026, enabling a smooth flow of traffic upon inauguration.
The project is part of BMC’s broader initiative to upgrade ageing infrastructure and improve connectivity across Mumbai. The Sion Bridge revamp joins critical works underway at Carnac Bridge and Bellasis Flyover. Despite temporary disruptions, officials emphasise that safety and engineering standards are being prioritised. Once completed, the new Sion Bridge will significantly ease traffic congestion and strengthen the city’s long-term transport network.
