July 8, 2025: Mumbai is poised to enhance its urban landscape with the opening of a 7.5-kilometre promenade along the Coastal Road, scheduled for July 15, 2025. Stretching from Breach Candy to Worli, this long-awaited public space marks a significant step towards eco-friendly design and improved public accessibility. It reflects the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) commitment to building sustainable, pedestrian-friendly environments while the broader Coastal Road project continues apace.
Transforming once-inaccessible reclaimed land, the promenade introduces a blend of functionality and leisure. Features include jogging tracks, cycling lanes, seating areas, and landscaped green pockets—offering Mumbaikars much-needed relief from the city’s intensity. Modelled on the charm of Marine Drive, this sea-facing walkway aims to extend Mumbai’s cherished coastline culture and improve quality of life for residents.
To meet immediate sanitation needs, BMC will install four mobile bio-toilets at key points—near Amarsons Garden, Mahalaxmi, and two locations in Worli. These temporary, environmentally friendly units will serve the public until permanent infrastructure is developed.
The promenade runs parallel to the southbound carriageway and is part of the 70 hectares of public space carved out of 111 hectares of reclaimed land. Future plans include developing urban forests and theme parks on the landward side, fostering biodiversity and creating green lungs for the city.
The initiative represents a shift in Mumbai’s urban planning—prioritising health, sustainability, and equitable access. By promoting walking and cycling, and incorporating greenery into major transport infrastructure, the city moves closer to global standards of inclusive development.
As Mumbai continues to urbanise, the Coastal Road promenade sets a precedent for future projects—where public access to open spaces is no longer an afterthought but a central design principle.
