Thane’s Kasarvadavli Flyover Phase 1 Now Open, Promises Smoother Travel

July 9, 2025: The first phase of the Kasarvadavli Flyover on Thane’s busy Ghodbunder Road was officially opened to the public on Tuesday, marking a key milestone in regional infrastructure progress. Built by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the flyover aims to significantly ease traffic congestion and enhance connectivity between Thane and neighbouring areas, including Mumbai and Vasai.

MMRDA officials noted that the new structure would provide much-needed relief for daily commuters and freight transporters along this crucial corridor. Ghodbunder Road connects Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Bhiwandi, Vasai, and Virar, and is frequently used by heavy goods vehicles heading to JNPT and Vashi.

The newly operational flyover spans approximately 721 metres and includes a 7.5-metre-wide two-lane carriageway. An integrated 2×2 lane underpass adds to its multi-layered traffic management strategy. The design accommodates up to 73,333 passenger car units per day, preparing the corridor for future traffic growth while addressing current bottlenecks.

Notably, the project has been planned in alignment with the forthcoming Metro Line 4 (Wadala–Gaimukh), allowing for improved intermodal transport connectivity in the near future. This integrated approach will ensure smoother transitions between road and rail travel, contributing to a more sustainable and accessible urban mobility framework.

Maharashtra’s Transport Minister, who had championed the flyover, inaugurated the project and praised its role in strengthening links between Thane and major logistics corridors such as Borivali, Vasai, and Gujarat. Phase 2 of the flyover is currently under development and will progress in coordination with the metro line’s construction.

This strategic investment not only supports regional economic growth but also contributes to reduced emissions and improved quality of life—an important step toward a cleaner, more inclusive, and future-ready Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
