Elevated Link Between Parel And Haji Ali Opens, Aims To Decongest Key Arterial Routes

July 10, 2025: In a major infrastructure push, the Maharashtra government has announced plans for a 1.5-km, six-lane elevated road to connect Senapati Bapat Marg in Parel with the entry and exit points of the coastal road at Haji Ali. With an estimated cost between Rs 250 crore and Rs 300 crore, the project promises to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve east-west connectivity in central Mumbai.

Unlike many other large-scale infrastructure projects, this proposed corridor will not require land acquisition, making its construction process relatively seamless and less disruptive to ongoing traffic. Authorities expect this signal-free road to provide faster, safer, and more fuel-efficient travel for thousands of daily commuters.

The elevated road will run alongside the Mahalaxmi Racecourse, pass near the NSCI Dome, and land near Dr E Moses Road at the end of Senapati Bapat Marg. It is expected to enhance access to key arterial roads including NM Joshi Marg, Gokhale Road, Lady Jamshed Road, and Bhavani Shankar Road. The improved network will benefit connectivity to destinations such as Shivaji Park, Siddhivinayak Temple, Mahim, and Lower Parel.

Currently, travellers between Parel and Haji Ali are forced to take circuitous routes via Worli Naka, Pandurang Budhkar Marg, and Dr E Moses Road — routes that increase travel time and fuel consumption. The proposed elevated road is anticipated to reduce this commute to just 10 minutes.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who announced the project, described it as a “transformative step” in addressing Mumbai’s chronic traffic challenges and strengthening its infrastructure. Once completed, the bridge is expected to benefit heavily congested areas such as Dadar, Matunga, and Mahim, offering direct and smoother access to Mumbai’s coastal corridor.
